“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

- Eunice Kennedy Shriver opening the first international games for athletes with intellectual disabilities - 1968

It’s been a hectic yet exciting start to 2015! Getting the blog up and running has been a challenge but challenges are always most welcome and now here we are standing up and running! I’m excited to kick off with a chat about a fantastic opportunity to give back in a tangible way this summer!

The year began on go with the start of a new project working away on the west coast as the Venue Director for Opening & Closing Ceremonies for The Special Olympics World Games which will be held in Los Angeles in July & August of this year! From a project perspective there is much to tackle as we work enthusiastically behind the scenes to make the event and particularly the Opening & Closing Ceremonies the very best they can be.

Inevitably as I find myself starting to become pre-occupied with operational details, hard deadlines and production schedules, I have challenged myself not to forget the true mission of this event. One of the greatest perks of the job these days is working along side a few of our Athletes where I find myself fueled by their pure joy for life and the ability to find greatness in everything (even long meetings and jammed printers!!). I am assured I will leave this experience and this project having learned far more about the power and importance of inclusivity and acceptance than any technical event management or live production skill-set I will have gained and I am grateful for the experience.

I am also aware that the expense of competing on the world stage means that there are very talented athletes who are unable to participate simply because they cannot afford the expense. This is one area where I know for sure there is power in numbers. To that end, Carey Communications has committed to raising $2500 in funds to sponsor an athlete competing at the World Games this summer and hope you might join in that effort. Even as much as a few dollars when pulled together can change everything for an Athlete who is ready and eager to participate!

Included is the link to a personalized fundraising page where you can donate to help meet and hopefully surpass the goal! Collectively we have the power to give an Athlete and their family an experience of a lifetime.

I am thrilled and excited to play some small part in this great event and hope you will tune in to the Opening Ceremony as we broadcast live July 25, 2015, on ESPN where we will cheer our Athlete to huge success!
